  • Your rights as a carer
  1. About Carers
  2. Your Rights as a Carer

Your rights as a carer

We believe Carers have rights:

  • Carers have a right to be recognised and valued
  • Carers have a right to a good quality of life
  • Carers have a right to a life of their own
  • Carers have a right to stay physically and mentally well

Since the passing of the Care Act in 2014 carers  have the same rights under the law as the person they are caring for and this includes the right to a Carers Assessment.

For more information on carers rights follow this link;

You can also find further information at https://carers.org/article/care-act-2014-england

I didn't realise that I could have my own assessment as a carer and that I have a choice if I want to continue in my caring role. Carer Survey response by a Carer

You have a legal right to an individual Carers Asssessment and we can help you through this process.

  • It is free and will look at what things could make your role as a carer easier
  • Will help you to put in place a Wellbeing Plan
  • Find out if you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to
  • Understand your needs as a carer to improve your own wellbeing
  • Identify practical and emotional support available to you
  • Discuss what you'd need to know in an emergency
  • Find out what support is available to help you get back into work
  • Be listened to

For further information on having a Carer's assessment through Gateshead Council please visit their website at https://www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/4946/Carer-s-assessment

We are members of two national organisations where you can go to find more general information on looking after someone:
