Susan is one of our very dedicated volunteers and is also a carer.

Susan began volunteering with us in September 2018 as a receptionist.

“Due to suffering from a chronic medical condition I was medically retired two years ago after working for the same employer for 29 years. I did find this quite difficult to accept especially since I had worked from leaving school and had never been unemployed.

Apart from my caring role I found that I had quite a bit of time on my hands and was starting to feel quite depressed. Volunteering has definitely helped me feel useful once again and has given me something to do. It has also given me the chance to give something back to the Charity as way of a thank you for all of the help and support they have given me in my caring role.

I really enjoy helping out at events promoting Gateshead Carers and especially their Volunteering Programme.  I also enjoy helping out with admin tasks whether it be working on the Main Reception Desk or labelling and stuffing envelopes which I find can be quite therapeutic.

I would definitely recommend volunteering with Gateshead Carers as it is a great way of meeting new people and making new friends but is also a fantastic Charity to work for which helps and supports so many unpaid Carers living in Gateshead.”
