Alcohol & Substance Misuse

The emotional impact of looking after someone who uses drugs or alcohol can be confusing and distressing at the best of times. Family members often feel sidelined when it comes to their loved ones treatment programme, which only adds to the anger and confusion.

Our dedicated Alcohol and Substance Misuse Carer Support Worker helps carers to understand their loved ones addiction by discussing the implications of the substance and how this effects their health, helping carers to understand why their loved one behaves in a certain ways.  We aim to alleviate the stigma that surrounds substance misuse carers and help them to understand the recovery process of the cared for person, alleviating stress by putting coping mechanisms in place and working out triggers that could be disabling to the cared for persons recovery journey. We help carers to have a life of their own and encourage them to engage in activities and training that will help them become more confident about themselves and try to alleviate stress within the family.

If you care for someone with an alcohol or substance misuse problem speak to one of our experienced Carer Support Workers to see how we can help you… Call 0191 4900121 or contact us here.

Living with the effects

Our friendly and experienced Carer Support Workers aim to meet the individual needs of carers by providing practical and emotional support at a time and place to suit their needs. If however, you feel we are unable to offer the right help we will sign post carers to external agencies in order to receive additional support, making sure that Carers are always treated with dignity and respect.

Benefits for Carers
Our dedicated Benefits Advisor is trained to help carers understand which benefits they could be entitled to and assist with making any claims. You may think you are not entitled to any benefits but we will make sure you get the financial assistance you are entitled to.

Take a short break

We recently set up a new short break group specifically for carers of those affected by a loved ones alcohol & substance misuse, helping to tackle some of the negative effects carers often experience due to their caring role. These include social isolation, depression or just wanting to learn a new skill and make new friends with people in similar circumstances, whatever your reason the group brings people together so that they can support each other in a relaxed and friendly environment.

We can also offer carers access to a range of other short break groups and activities that aim to help carers overcome some of the negative effects often experienced from caring.
