As an employer in the North East it is estimated that almost 15% of your employees will have significant caring responsibilities in addition to their employment, with 1 in 6 giving up or cutting back working hours in order to care. This is generating an unwelcome financial impact on businesses, who are faced with losing skilled employees and in whom they have already made a considerable investment.
Recent research published by Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and Carers UK indicated that as many as 1 million people (1 in 6 Carers) give up or cut back on work to care for someone, which is a real loss for employers as well as for families. Research has highlighted that rather than detracting from a company’s organisational focus, adopting a flexible approach to Carers can bring a wealth of benefits to your organisation.
Benefits to your organisation:
- Cost savings
- Staff retention, reduced recruitment and retention costs
- Increased levels of productivity and improved performance
- Reduced sick leave
- Better customer focus and service
Many employers now understand that a number of their employees will have caring responsibilities and this is an issue which increasingly impacts on their businesses. At the moment 90% of Working Carers are aged over 30 and are therefore likely to be within the workforce. Caring increases as people get older, therefore businesses should be aware that their most experienced employees could become Carers during their working lives.
