Delivering Equality and Diversity
Being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and a carer can bring about additional issues and concerns. One such worry may be that existing services to support you and your cared for may not be LGBT friendly, or you may feel uncomfortable about ‘coming out’ to people who can help. As a lesbian, gay, bisexual person looking after a partner, there may be pressure to ‘come out’ about the nature of your relationship with the various professionals involved in their care, or if you are caring for a parent or another family member, you may feel your own lesbian or gay identity is pushed to one side.
At Gateshead Carers we work hard to break down these barriers and make it easier for LGBT carers to access the support they need. As well as 1-2-1 tailored advice and guidance we also offer carers from this community access to the LGBT Carer Social Group, providing a safe and welcoming environment where members can feel comfortable talking about their specific needs and situations. The LGBT Carer Social Group allows carers to have a short break from their caring role by taking part in enjoyable activities, whilst having access to benefit support and other carer related issues. Visit the LGBT Carer Social Group page for more information.
