Ella is a member of the Gateshead Polish community and received support from Gateshead Carers Association after she attended one of their Polish Carer drop-in sessions. Ella looks after her 83 year old mum who has dementia and general ill health. Ella is her main carer and provides all her personal day to day care needs.
At one particular drop-in session Ella broke down when she expressed how pressured she felt into finding a job, as she could only claim Job Seekers Allowance and her mum was only receiving a small state pension.
With the aid of an interpreter a Carer Support Worker advised Ella about a Community Care Assessment so that she can get help with personal care, she also advised that her mum could be eligible to claim Attendance Allowance. If so, then Ella may be able to claim Carers Allowance which would help their financial situation and allow Ella to stay at home to look after her mum.
The Carer Support Worker referred Ella to Adult Social Care Direct so that mum could have a Community Care Assessment with the aid of an interpreter. She also helped Ella make a claim for her mum’s Attendance Allowance.
At the next Polish Carer drop-in session, Ella arrived absolutely delighted! Mum now has a social care package in place which includes daily personal care and some grab rails.
Ella said…“Everything is working perfectly, thank you, thank you!”.
