Claire: Hello my name’s Claire I’m the Volunteer Coordinator how can I help you?
Julie: Hello my name is Julie I’m interested in doing some volunteering.
Claire: Hi Julie it’s nice to meet you we have a number of volunteer opportunities available I can tell you about. Do you know what you are interested in doing?
Julie: I’m not sure, I haven’t worked for a long time as I’ve been caring for my mam but I would like to do something that helps me get out for a few hours a week and that helps other people. I would also like to give something back as a thank you for all the support and help I have received from Gateshead carers and as I’ve got personal experience as a carer I would like to help others I can empathise with who are having a similar experience.
Claire: Ok well I can tell you a bit about each of the volunteer roles we have and you can see if any of them sound like something you would enjoy doing.
Julie: That would be great thank you
Claire: Firstly we have a befriending service which would involve visiting someone as a Volunteer Befriender to keep them company once a week for a few hours while their carer can have a break from their caring role. This is a good role if you enjoy chatting to people and would like to support someone on a one to one basis.
Claire: If you would prefer to be more out and about and enjoy chatting to people we have a Community Connector role that involves talking to people in your local community for example when you are at the doctors, library, hairdressers or local shops to find out what kind of activities and groups are in the area that we may not be aware of and would be beneficial for carers and the people they care for. It also involves letting people know about us and how we can help. You could do this by taking some of our leaflets with you to give out or help at an event where we have a stall and talk to people about what we do. This is a very flexible role and can fit around your availability.
Claire: We also have admin roles available if you would prefer a more office based role that would involve helping on reception, answering the phone, taking messages and welcoming visitors.
Claire: Another role you may be interested in as a carer is our Carers Knowledge Panel for a group of carers to meet up every few months to discuss issues affecting carers and share your feedback and ideas about the services available to carers. At our last 2 meetings we talked about our Care to Share sessions and carers assessments.
Claire: I can also give you some information about the different roles to take away with you and have a think about what you would like to do.
Julie: Thank you that is really helpful I will have a look at those.
Claire: Do you have any questions Julie?
Julie: Yes what happens next?
Claire: We can have a chat about the role you are interested in and I will go through a form with you to get some details and register you as a volunteer. Then we can arrange a time for you to come in for an induction where we can go through everything you will need for volunteering with us and you will get a handbook with all the information.
Julie: That sounds good I will have a think about the roles and let you know what I decide
Claire: If you think of anything else you would like to ask please give me a call
Claire: It was nice to meet you Julie I look forward to speaking to you again soon.
Julie: Thank you see you soon bye
